AiM completely changed my personal and professional practices. What makes AiM so different? 🤔

It's more than a mechanical deep dive, but a journey to better understanding what really influences human movement based on a set of simple, self-evident, yet paradigm shifting principles, rarely discussed and often misunderstood.

For instance:

- DIFFERENT RULES apply to optimizing a body’s options for upright, forward motion through space (gait) than to controlled mobility and strength exercises (like squats or downward dogs).
- The closed chain mechanics in gait are VERY different from open chain, which informs how to build more specific and effective corrective exercises
- Muscle "activation" in gait is less to do with concentric contraction, and more about MOMENTUM and ECCENTRIC tissue load (should you really squeeze your glutes when you walk 🤔).
- A body's compensation patterns are not always influenced by mobility, stability, and strength deficits, but by it's perception of center and how it is UNCONSCIOUSLY managing it's center of mass within it's base of support (this is why stretching and strengthening sometimes don't work).
- Foot pronation and supination occur in specific relationships with every other joint of the body, the position of which are all constantly changing within the space of 0.6-0.8 seconds of a single footstep.
- 0.6-0.8 seconds is FAST to organize an entire symphony of bones, joints, and muscles into efficient gait phases. TIMING is an overlooked variable beyond mobility and stability.
- Optimizing "neutral" spine, ironically, is more about exploring movement than training stability

Module 1 covers lower and upper body mechanics and is the prerequisite for learning the #flowmotionmodel of gait.

This is an invaluable course for all movement and manual therapy professionals wanting to improve their movement coaching/observational skills and help their clients and patients with movement solutions.

Dear @theJillMiller,

A few days before Xmas 2022 I had a private session with you to address some post-COVID oxygen saturation drops I’ve been experiencing. Specifically, you asked what I wanted to get out of our session, and I explained there was a difference in my ribcage and abdominal wall biomechanics between mouth and nasal breathing — mouth breathing = good biomechanics, while nasal breathing was constrained (for lack of a better term). I wanted to find good biomechanics nasal breathing. Upon leaving our session, I immediately felt a subjective change, and that stuck (NOTE: I have practiced the Corgeous ball exercises you taught me): my nasal breathing mechanics matched my mouth breathing!

A few weeks later, you contacted me to check in to see how I was faring with the program. My best objective measure of progress would have been in fact to sleep with my medical grade pulse-oximeter, but I was traveling and forgot to bring it. I replied I would check back in once I was re-united with.

Well, home for a little over a week now, and I haven’t wanted to sleep with my pulse-oximeter (my severe oxygen drops only occur at night) for reasons beyond the scope of this post. But I do have an objective measure now! Yesterday, I skied uphill about 1000’ with some younger friends (i.e. we skied at a decent clip), and once we reached our high point, I realized I’d been nasal breathing the whole way up!!!! No way in gazillion years would that have been possible prior to working with you. And there was no volition involved, I just breathed that way unconsiously.

Thank you Jill!!! I’ll save how your Yoga Tune Up balls have saved my body from almost daily snow shoveling for another post!

Enjoying playing in the snow rather than managing it. And of course it wouldn’t be a Jack/Russ outing without a good history convo.

When it doesn't stop snowing for months; and your town is cut off by avalanches, floods, and rock slides; and you have to spend all your time shoveling so your roof doesn't cave in and so you can simply leave the house...MUST PLAY MUSIC. I was especially psyched we were joined the some of our wonderful teenagers!!! They give me hope for the future.

p.s. you know it's bad when you're in a room full of avid skiers, and someone announces: "I think it's stopped snowing" and everyone cheers. And then they correct themselves: "no, still snowing" and everyone looks overwhelmingly defeated.

Mono City Strong!!! Cutting to the chase…Jack is fine!!! All those years at Bodie State Park year round, and his Swedish DNA…he is just fine.

Well, if you're going to live through being cut off by avalanches with no power, then may you live on "Ranger Row” as I fondly call my neighborhood. The number of people who are currently or have been park rangers (including my husband — retired park ranger). Add in all the other folks who’ve worked for NPS, State Parks, Forest Service in some other capacity, and that might be about half the adults in Mono City. Also, in my little burg of about 100 people are several professional wilderness guides. So collectively, survival and organizational skills galore! There is a daily meeting at the fire hall, and now some kind of emergency text app for communicating. Neighbors are completely looking out for each other. Posts on the emergency text thread like:

If anyone is short on pet food please contact...

My furnace is having issues, who can help?

Oh yeah, because another common profession is trades person, so we have contractors, plumbers, etc.

As I told one concerned friend: we are used to living off the grid with no water or electricity...we call it a vacation.

Tuesday, I land in L.A. and start making my way home. Praying I don't have a winter driving epic to get there! I've had more than enough of those in my decades of commuting to Bishop. Update: Power is back on!!!! It might be temporary, but for now it’s on. The power company is using a hydro-electric power plant up Lundy Canyon which required heroic efforts to reach and turn on in blizzard conditions.

We have two roads to go anywhere from Mono City: 395 and 167. See Caltrans description of 395 south of Mono City! Avalanches covering the road (and most likely have taken out some of the road) are 1/2 mile wide and 30-40 feet deep!!! The first photo is of our normally 2-lane highway buried under the avalanche. That road's not opening any time soon, and I'm not holding my breath for power either (avalanches took out power transmission lines -- 15-25 poles down, and power company can't access to repair till road is plowed and repaired). See video for status of our only other road (although progress is being made on plowing that road...at least it's not blocked by an avalanche). Currently, electricity related issues with our water supply, so ATM no water either. A helicopter dropped water and MREs yesterday. Law Enforcement escorted a caravan of neighbors to the north and back home later. Some neighbors used the caravan to evacuate, and some resupplied and went home. About 5 wonderful neighbors called me to see if Jack needed any supplies (he is deaf, so they know to call me as he and I are in touch regularly). The least of our worries, but...we cannot get mail delivered to our house (this is our norm, not storm related), so our mail goes to Lee Vining post office, which is on the other side of the avalanches. When 167 opens, it would take us 6-8 hours round trip to go get mail as opposed to the normal 10 minute drive into town -- we'd have to go waaaaaaaayyyy around to get mail. I fly back to California on Tuesday. Wish me luck getting home to Jack! Hoping 167 opens by then. Oh and more snow expected this weekend!

I am still on the East Coast helping 89-year-old mom post-surgery. Meanwhile back at the ranch (i.e. Mono City where I live, and where Jack is currently having to do everything on his own, but with help from AMAZING neighbors)...
Many of the communities in the Eastern Sierra have been cut off by road closures due to blizzard conditions. Now, multiple avalanches have crossed our main road to go anywhere (395) -- avalanches both to the north and south -- and not only have they stranded people either trying to get home to or leave Mono City (and other communities to the North), but they've taken out transmission lines. The power company cannot access these lines due to said avalanches. The current prediction for having power again is Friday, but🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️.
Our wonderful volunteer fire department has opened the fire station (generator powered) for cell phone charging and warming. They are also offering a caravan escort to Hawthorne, NV (our only other road out of Mono City = 167 to Hawthorne, NV) at noon today. I am not there, but I imagine that road warrants a fire department escort -- remote, rural, plowed???, one pass to go over to get to Hawthorne.
Jack is fine: we heat with wood, and our wood pile is plentiful (he did mention he's running out of fire starter, but I told him this is a great opportunity to purge his filing cabinets -- badly needed). His only relatively minor inconvenience is he has to keep the fire going all night so our pipes don't freeze (normally, we have an electric furnace that comes on when we are away from home or in the middle of the night, set a 55 degrees, specifically to keep the pipes from freezing).
He was able to move all refrigerator and freezer foods into coolers on the deck. Like preppers, us frequent campers have enough freeze dried food to last a while. He has camping stoves and propane tanks/cartridges a plenty.
I am extremely worried about neighbors (Mono City and beyond) who need electricity for medical devices and heat, or shortages of medication and food.
Extreme inexpressible gratitude to: Emergency First Responders, Mono City Fire Department, CalTrans snow removal, and neighbors looking out for Jack!
