Nothing beats a hike in the woods with old friends. I've been friends with both these women since long before we were all grey haired. My guess is, somewhere there's a photo of the three of us hiking in the woods where we are two blondes and a brunette.

Why I teach for AiM (Anatomy in Motion)…

Total rookie mistake this morning. I was in such a rush to get to the trailhead, I forgot to pack socks🤦‍♀️. So, I decided to take a chance and do this steep rocky hike in my flip flops  !

Well, it turned out to be just fine — neither foot/ankle pain nor instability while actually hiking, nor after the hike!! Honestly, I credit the AiM exercises I have been doing since 2014. So many conversations about what shoes we should wear, and this morning proved to me once again, as @garyward_aim always says, it’s not about the shoes, it’s about your foot mechanics. Thanks to AiM, my feet have both strength and mobility. And equally importantly, their joint motions are well integrated with the rest of my joints (knees, hips, spine, shoulders, etc.).

There is an intricate dance between all the joints in every footstep, including the 33 joints in each foot — timing and coordination: which joints move when, where (what direction are the joints moving in all three dimensions?), and how much. The Flow Motion Model, upon which the AiM Method is based, answers all these questions, for all joints, in each phase of gait. The exercises I have been practicing since 2014, have trained my joints, including the joints in my feet, to perform this intricate choreography.  

Please understand, I am not saying my mechanics are perfect – far from it! Simply, compared to where I was pre-AiM when I would never even have considered attempting this, my biomechanics are so improved, that I could in fact do this steep hike in flip flops no problem!  

And lest I sound like I am in a cult, you can ask Gary…I am probably his most annoying student as I question everything…it’s my nature. So, thank you Gary, and apologies for being such an annoying student, and now staff member😂.

We are suffering the worst wealth and income inequality since the Great Depression. And it’s even worse for BIPOC people and women. This is class warfare by billionaires against working people. It’s critical we stand united to demand economic justice. Stop defending billionaires. Start taxing them. #justice #LaborDay

Mom (left) is 90. Every single day she takes a wal

Mom (left) is 90. Every single day she takes a walk and does a 30-minute exercise program I made for her. In fact, when hospitalized with COVID last November, her biggest complaint was they wouldn’t let her do her exercises. After a few days in the hospital, a physical therapist showed up, and tried to give my mother the basic exercises they give the elderly – e.g. sit on the side of the bed and kick your leg 10 times. My mother asked: “can I show you what I do?” Once the physical therapist saw her program, she came back every day to learn it.

Mom still teaches and takes classes, and she walks to campus. Whenever I offer to help her lift anything heavy, she just looks at me with a cocked eyebrow with a look that says “are you joking…as if I need help.”😏

Mom’s friend (right) is 83. She doesn’t just garden, she landscapes. She moves really heavy rocks – lots and lots and lots of them. Her property is known in the neighborhood for its rock wall and rock lined pathways (years of work). She has also transplanted many ferns from the surrounding forest – lots and lots of them. Each transplant takes her 4 hours – the ferns are quite large, so there is much digging involved. Then there are the large fallen tree limbs she drags up the hill by herself💪. She also still edits an academic journal.

Mom’s friend has had foot issues, so of course I had to dip into my Anatomy in Motion (AiM) toolbox to help her with her (self-described) “very flat feet.” She made it clear, she has neither time nor the attention span for anything complicated, so the video is my 20 second version of an AiM exercise to re-supinate the foot, or lift the arch – I needed to find something she could clearly see and feel for buy-in. Sold.

Thanks again @garyward_aim for your amazing AiM Method! Helping old ladies like me and Mom (and now her friends) keep doing what we love!

Mom says thank you @garyward_aim! I gave my mother a rehab program,using Gary Ward’s Anatomy in Motion Method, which she still does religiously even though we are now one and a half years post surgery. The progress, I observe:

1️⃣ She now has better transverse plane opposition between the rib cage and the pelvis, or in plain English, her rib cage and pelvis now rotate an opposite directions, which is what we want to see.
2️⃣ she now has it better frontal plain motion in the pelvis, or in plain English, she now walks with a better Marilyn Monroe sashay, essential for shock absorption.

Yes, that's my mother last night saying: you have to promise this is the last celebration of the F-bomb 90th!

OK, this was the 4th celebration already this year. But bad news for Mom...tonight is the real party with the real cake!

We took Mom to the Berkshires in Massachusetts where she's been going every summer for many decades. Only this year, I had a crazy thought...let's invite the relatives and have a 90th birthday extended family celebration...who's going to come anyway besides our immediate family and kids and spouses? Well, to my shock and delight almost everyone said yes!!! So we decided to treat this almost as a destination wedding, and besides the actual birthday party tonight, we bought pizzas for last night, and will have a bagels and lox brunch tomorrow. It's the least we can so as so many relatives traveled and rented lodging to come for the celebration.

So, sorry Mom...one more celebration tonight with an even more full house (not everyone arrived yesterday, so we were only 18) and a bigger cake....we're not quite done with the F-bomb 90th.

I feel so fortunate to call @juliewiebept one of my primary influences since 2014! IMHO, she does not get the credit she deserves for being the trail blazer she is. Much of what she’s been teaching for well over a decade is now the mainstream party-line in pelvic health, but that was not always the case. There was a time that all females were offered for pelvic health issues was Kegels, and in clinical practice, this is still often the case.

I confess, I have a knee jerk reaction when Julie puts out a new course, I purchase – extrapolating from my past purchases (all her online content targeting adult populations), I know the quality will be jaw dropping, worthy of many re-watches due to so many pearls. Social Media lends itself to black and white dichotomous statements -- solution <xyz> will solve all your problems. In reality, working with the human body is so much more nuanced -- watch this clip.

Half asleep this morning, I snuggle up next to him, wrap my arm around his shoulder, think to myself: “I love him so – wait, what!?!?! What did his scapula just do when he inhaled!?!? Is he over-recruiting his accessory muscles of respiration!?!? Oh, we need to work on that.”

My grandsons have decided they love to cook! Yesterday, we gave the parents a ski-date-day; they got to come home to lasagna and Cesar salad (homemade dressing and all) made by the kids w/ just a wee bit of supervision😉. The kids even made the shopping list, and did all the shopping -- I was just the wheels (to the store) and wallet.

So fun!

Now, I just need to adjust to their musical taste shift from Tears for Fears to AC/DC....somehow driving along singing Back in Black (on repeat at the top of our lungs) just doesn't do it for me like Everybody Wants to Rule the World🤦‍♀️ 😂

Happy 90th (!!!!!!!) birthday to my darling mother

Happy 90th (!!!!!!!) birthday to my darling mother. OK...that's a lot of photos, but 90(!!!!!) is quite the big deal and I think she looks AMAZING. When my father (her husband for 67 years) passed a few years ago, she joined something called Learning in Retirement for retired professors to take and teach classes. So, she is not only taking classes, she is teaching one as well!!! And she walks to her campus. Thankfully, she is slowing down a bit, so I can almost keep up with her now😂🤦‍♀️.

What a treat to spend time with my dear friend and mentor @garyward_aim. We made HUGE progress on a project we've been working on for a while. And in case you're wondering about the matchy matchy...no AiM doesn’t have a new uniform. Gary came from sunny warm Bali☀️, and I came from the mountains of California (7000')🌨️. One of us had enough down garments to share in a surprisingly cold Southern California😂
